About Malahat Baig-Amin

Malahat Baig-Amin is a psychotherapist licensed in VA and the District of Columbia. She received her master’s degree in social work & international social welfare from Columbia University in New York. Her post-graduate work has involved both national and international experiences. In the US, she directed a study on immigrant women and health issues focusing on violence against women within the South Asian immigrant community through a collaboration with community-based organizations and academic institutions. Her international experience includes work on gender and human rights with United Nations agencies. She has presented at several professional conferences and published in professional and academic journals.

Ms. Baig-Amin also has a bachelor’s degree in religious studies with a focus on Islamic Studies from California State University. She spent several years as an active member and teacher at the Islamic Society of Orange County in California. The combination of her professional training, academic and community-based research and fieldwork in the US and abroad inform her work with clients.

Ms. Baig-Amin has a private practice with offices in Mclean, Virginia and Washington DC.  She counsels adolescents, adults, couples and families. She helps clients with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, marital conflict, domestic violence, anger management, trauma, abuse, interpersonal conflict, work issues and adjustment disorders. She utilizes her knowledge of Islam, multiculturalism and psychology in her practice with her Muslim clients. She ascribes to an empowerment approach based on a strengths model of treatment to assist clients in overcoming challenges they may face. This approach encompasses psycho-dynamic, cognitive-behavioral therapy and other therapeutic models of treatment appropriate for the issues raised in the process of psychotherapy.

Ms. Baig-Amin also serves as a consultant and provides consultation and counseling services to international organizations and their employees in the District of Columbia.

I offer counseling services for adolescents, adults, couples, and families.  I ascribe to an integrative approach based on an empowerment model of treatment to assist clients in overcoming challenges they may face by helping them identify and access personal strengths.  I have been trained in psychodynamic, interpersonal, family systems, empowerment, cognitive-behavioral and trauma-informed therapies.

I have experience working on treating individuals who have experienced trauma, anxiety, and depressive conditions and in helping individuals who have interpersonal and/or self-difficulties such as mood disorders, marital conflict, domestic violence, stress management, childhood sexual abuse, interpersonal conflict, work issues, and adjustment disorders.

I also have expertise working with foreign/international individuals and families dealing with the challenges of life transitions, racial/cultural issues, divorce/separation matters, and adjustment issues.

Your time and resources are important.  I listen for and help you identify your strengths and skills, how you think about things, what’s important and meaningful for you, and what you want from therapy. I can help you get clear about what’s at the core of the issues, and help you find your way through to what you need to resolve it – either making the changes you need to or finding a different way to be with difficult situations. We will work together to increase your ability to emotionally regulate and be resilient.

I normally conduct an initial assessment in the first session.  During this time, we can both decide if I am the best person to provide the services you need in order to meet your treatment goals.  If we decide to proceed with psychotherapy, I typically structure sessions once per week, at a mutually agreeable time.  I strongly believe in outcomes-oriented practice and thus, monitor progress frequently in order to ensure that we are meeting your treatment goals.
